Your first automation: choosing a process worth improving
A practical starting point for small businesses: identify a repetitive task, define its scope and measure what changes.
Start with a specific task
Choose a process your team repeats often: sorting inquiries, preparing quotes or entering invoices. Describe how information arrives, who reviews it and what the next person needs. A bounded task is easier to test than an entire department.
Look at the exceptions
Gather real examples, including difficult cases. What happens when information is missing, a document changes or approval is needed? Define when the system can prepare work and when it should ask for help.
Measure before and after
Record the time spent, errors and corrections. Test the new workflow with a limited volume and compare results. Include supervision and maintenance: fewer steps do not always mean less work.
A first step
Describe one task in five lines: input, steps, tools, owner and output. That is enough to start a useful conversation about what to automate.
Every process needs its own assessment. This guide is a starting point, not a promise of results.
